What is the paladin's oath of conquest in D&D 5e?

The Paladin Oath of Conquest is one of two Paladin subclasses introduced inXanathar's Guide to Everything. He appears alongside the paladin Oath of Redemption, which is thematically the complete opposite. There is alieto eachwhich, Right?

Conquest Paladins might be known by many other names. They are called sometimesTyrannenritterÖferreterosby those who know them and their ideals.

But awe and belligerence can easily go awry if left unchecked.

Those whose martial ways lead them to do business with beings from the Nine Hells are often called Knights of Hell. These warriors often come to serve the Archdemon known as Bel, a military genius from Avernus.

Taking the oath of conquest is a balancing act. While these paladins seek victory in war as the ultimate means of upholding justice and destroying chaos, they resent even more those who have become Hellknights.

Principles of the Oath of Conquest

Mercy is not included in the Oath of Conquest Paladin playbook. Enemies must be destroyed or subdued.

The principles of the Oath of Conquest make this very clear. These teachings are burned into the flesh of the Paladin's upper arm as a valid reminder.

  • Extinguish the flame of hope:Simply defeating an enemy in combat is not enough. Your victory must be so overwhelming that your enemies' will to fight is shaken forever. A sword can end a life. Fear can end an empire.
  • Rule with an iron fist:Once you've conquered, don't tolerate dissent. Your word is law. Those who obey her are preferred. Those who oppose him will be punished as an example for all who can follow him.
  • Strength Above All:You will rule until someone stronger emerges. So you must become more powerful and rise to the challenge or fall to your own undoing.

Talk about an intense oath, aren't you?

role in the game

Oath of Conquest Champion swears by being an offensive powerhouse.

While they can definitely inflict pain on a single enemy like other paladins, they also gain some very useful stats that help them deal with groups of enemies.

A high Charisma score is very important to play an Oath of Conquest Paladin. Some of your spells depend on having a high casting DC and one of your Divinity channel options.

In social situations that require a bit of intimidation and a heavy hand, this makes a great party face, too. Although the most comfortable social situations are better left to...well...almost everyone else...

Paladin ability Oath of Conquest

The Oath of Conquest Paladin seeks to completely overwhelm his enemies, and his gear reflects this.

With powerful subclass features and lots of useful spells, you always have plenty of options to ruin your enemies' day!

Oath of Conquest Spells

Your Holy Oath grants you additional spells designed to aid you and develop your subclass theme.

In each level you see on the table you will get bonus spells. These spells are always ready and do not count towards the number of spells you can ready each day.

If a spell isn't on the paladin spell list, it still counts as a paladin spell for you.

Paladin-Leveloath spell
3Armor of Agathys, Commando
5Keep person, arma spiritual
9Grant curse, fear
13Dominant Beast, Stoneskin
17Cloudkill, domineering person

I know right? I would truly think that there is more healing and support here for a course that is about peace, love and understanding!(jokes)

Oath of Conquest Paladin Spell List Thoughts

Agathy's armorIt's an excellent buff that will likely come in handy throughout your adventure. It's just nice to gain temporary hitpoints while also dealing passive damage to enemies that hit you.DomainIt's useful if you use it skillfully and have a good Charisma stat.

weapon of the spiritIt can help you a lot when dealing with multiple enemies or dealing more damage to a priority target.

You should be careful how you use your bonus action, but this is a very useful spell. Even better, it doesn't require any concentration (which is great and a bit broken)!

person on holdIt can be very useful if you have a decent Charisma stat. Prepare your group very well to stack the target and it could very well be a checkmate!

Angstis the last spell on the Oath of Conquest Paladin spell list. Combining it with your Conquest Aura (which we'll cover later in this guide) is just plain sickening. If an enemy is immune to fear effects, give cursecan be used in a variety of ways to intimidate the enemy.

master beastit is very situational and largely forgetful for you.Steinhaut, on the other hand, is amazing at helping you at the forefront of the game. It is expensive, however, as it contains 100 gp worth of diamond dust, so use it sparingly.

dominate personit will probably get a lot of use from you. It's a powerful spell that also feeds into the Paladin's Oath of Conquest theme. When the enemies groupWolkenkillgives you a good AoE spell option.

Channel Divinity (Level 3)

Like all paladins, the paladin Oath of Conquest has two ways in which he can channel his divinity. You can use this function once per short or long break.

Capture Presence:As an action, you force each target creature you can see within 30 feet of you to make a Wisdom saving throw.

On a failed saving throw, a creature fears you for 1 minute.

The frightened creature can reroll this saving throw at the end of each of its turns, ending the effect on a success on itself.

If you're feeling surrounded, this can be a great way to scatter your enemies.

(Video) How to Play an Oath of Vengeance Paladin in Dungeons & Dragons 5e

Getting your Aura of Conquest to level 7 will greatly improve it. However, the fear spell you get at level 9 will overshadow this, as enemies only get a save when you're not in their line of sight.

Still, this is a solid option when you're dealing with a large number of enemies.

Guided Strike:Whenever you make an attack roll, you can channel your Divinity to gain a +10 bonus on the roll.

You make this choice after seeing the throw but before the DM says if the attack hits or misses.

It's incredibly useful to have an additional +10 attack bonus ready once per break. After all, there must be times when a coup is absolutely necessary.

This also works well with the Grand Master of Weapons talent.A minus of -5 to deal 10 extra damage is easily offset by Guided Strike!

You now get a +5 bonus to your attack and deal 10 extra damage!

Aura of Conquest (Level 7)

When used tactically, the Conquest Aura you gain at level 7 can end entire fights before they even begin.

You constantly exude a menacing aura when not incapacitated. The aura spreads 10 feet from you in all directions, but not through full coverage.

If a creature is afraid of you, its speed is reduced to 0 while in the aura. This creature takes psychic damage equal to half your paladin level when it begins its turn there.

At level 18, the range of this aura increases to 30 feet.

It is.

This one.

This is exactly what you build your Oath of Conquest Paladin on.Frighten those who oppose you, then punish them for their stupidity.

A movement speed of 0 means enemies cannot run away. Even better, they can't even stand up from a prone position.

They can still attack you from a disadvantage, but they struggle when they only have a 5ft range. You can take them out with psychic damage, or quickly finish the job with a reach weapon like a halberd.

You have good opportunities to instill fear in your enemies, especially if you obtained the Fear Spell at level 9. If you haven't already done soZorniger Schlagfrom the paladin spell list, you should do it now.

Also keep an eye out for items that will help you use fear effects on your enemies, such as the Dread Staff or Dread Mace.

Disdainful Reprimand (Level 15)

Do you ever do something and immediately realize it was a VERY bad idea?

Yes... each of your enemies will get that crushing feeling too...

(Video) Davvy's D&D 5e Paladin Guide

Each time a creature hits you with an attack, that creature takes psychic damage equal to your Charisma modifier (minimum 1) unless you're Knocked Out.

The higher your Charisma modifier, the better. If you've maxed out your Charisma (and you should already have, since it's very important for this subclass), that's 5 free damage to the enemy on each hit.

It might not sound like much, but it's free, always available, and quickly adds up.

Enemies usually have 2-3 attacks at this point. That means you get at least 10-15 extra damage points for free.

Once you've cast your armor from Agathys (ideally), deal them even more damage. A single swipe at you when you have level 5 Agathys armor will force her to eat 30 damage between AoA and your scornful rebuke!

Invincible Conqueror (Level 20)

Once you have reached the pinnacle of the paladin's oath of conquest, only the mightiest of foes will dare to face you.

By becoming an Avatar of Conquest for 1 minute, you can use your action to gain various benefits once per long pause:

You have resistance to all damage.

It's OK. Wow. So all the damage you take is nowhalf reduced?!

I don't really need to explain why this is so great.

When you take the attack action on your turn, you can make an additional attack as part of that action.

More attacks mean you deal more damage and have a better chance of landing a critical hit.

Your melee weapon attacks score a critical hit on a d20 roll of 19 or 20.

Now your chances of landing a critical hit with each attack have doubled!

Everything about Invincible Conqueror is great. You are an absolute machine that can do incredible damage.

With a duration of 1 minute, you should definitely save this for big fights. You have 10 turns to go crazy with your enemies.

If the fight lasts that long, you still have a huge advantage until the end of the fight.

Military experience is the easiest and most logical way to connect a Paladin to the Oath of Conquest in history. These Paladins are a force to be reckoned with, and a unit of them charging into battle can repel most enemies.

Was your character in such a unit? How does this experience lead you to set out with the group?

(Video) Conquest, Redemption, Crown & Oathbreaker Dungeons and Dragons 5e Paladin Subclass Review

While there is definitely a major theme of warmongering in the Paladin's Oath of Conquest,How does that harden your character?

After all, even for a holy oath like this, war after war is a sure path to corruption and the dreaded Hellknight. Worse, you might be tempted to become onein broken vows!

Paladins of Oath of Conquest do not have to be evil. While their methods and views are certainly strict, they are still capable of being warriors forever.

A well-meaning paladin of conquest might justify his aggression with experience fighting evil creatures. After seeing the ferocity of these enemies firsthand, they believe the only way to truly rid the land of evil threats is to destroy them completely.

You could argue that a necromancer raising armies of undead is incapable of turning the page. If people really want to get rid of the Necromancer's schemes and chaos, it must be dealt with severely.

A Conquest Paladin doesn't have to be in constant combat. Rather, they might view their approach as the "greater good," using overwhelming force to counter aggression to ultimately save more lives than a protracted war would inherently cost.

Don't confuse Oath of Conquest with a One Note character theme. There are so many ways to customize it to suit your campaign and party!

Is the paladin's oath of conquest good?

When it comes to characters that fit an aggressive playstyle,The Paladin's Oath of Conquest is truly remarkable. They are one of the best aggressive subclasses in the game.

Spells like Spirit Weapon and Armor of Agathys carry the Oath of Conquest well into the early game.

The biggest downside to Oath of Conquest is that it doesn't really get going until level 9. But even before that, they are offensive powerhouses for any group.

Combining a healthy amount of control with spells and traits to keep enemies at bay means a Conquest Paladin can have a great day when enemies don't make their saves. While restraining enemies or freezing them in fear, the paladin and his party can trample them.

Just think about the enemies you will face.

Fear is not an uncommon resistance. You can seethis nifty graphic by u/RocksInMyDryer on Redditshowing that it is the third most common immunity disorder (after poisoned and enchanted).

This means that you will have a much harder time dealing with undead, buildings or other creatures that cannot be afraid. It's nothing you can't beat, but it's definitely worth it when a campaign features mostly these types of enemies!

If you're in a campaign like this but still want an aggressive Paladin option, check this outOath of Vengeance Paladin.
