What are the wings of the enneagram? What's its purpose? How do you find your Enneagram wing? Can you only have one wing?
Even if you're new to the world of enneagrams, you've probably come across enneagram wings, but what exactly are enneagram wings?
If you are not sure of your Enneagram type, the first thing to do is checkHow to find your typeohow to confirm your type.
What are the wings of the enneagram?
You will notice that the Enneagram symbol is circular. Any number after and before another number. In the case of my logo, it also includes colors and that can really give you a good idea of what the Enneagram wings are.
The wings are like a color wheel. If you are type 2, your main color is green. But people are not complete copies of each other and therefore there are nuances.
A type 2 has wing options of 1 and 3 (blue and yellow in my icon). These wings can change the color of our guy a bit.
A 2w1 (short for "2 with 1 wing") is green with some blue. A 2w3 would be green with some yellow.
The strength of your wing determines how much of that wing color you have.

Some refer to the wings as salt and pepper for the "eggs" of our main type. Some use a lot of pepper, some use a lot of salt. Some use both... and some use neither!
Can you only have one wing?
Having a wing (a dominant wing) is the most common and that's why you always see people saying they are 1w9. But you are not limited to a dominant wing.
Actually, it is more correct to say that we all have two wings.…. BUT some use one wing, some use both wings, and some don't use their wings. But the wings are technically still there.
Can your wings change?
Some who wear one wing may find that as they get older they wear the other wing. I'm a 1w9 but my wing 2 has grown since I hit 30. (I'm still a 1w9 though).
Some with balanced wings may find that they prefer one wing for work and the other for home. Those that do not use their wings at all may find that they begin to incorporate their wings as they age and grow.
What are my wing options?
The wings can only be the numbers on each side of your type. Remember the color wheel analogy?
You can't be 8w5 or 3w7. That won't do.
For a quick breakdown, here are the wing options.
Type 1 has wing options of 9 and 2.
Type 2 has wing options of 1 and 3.
Type 3 has wing options of 2 and 4.
Type 4 has wing options of 3 and 5.
The Type 5 has wing options of 4 and 6.
The Type 6 has wing options of 5 and 7.
The Type 7 has wing options of 6 and 8.
The Type 8 has wing options of 7 and 9.
The Type 9 has wing options of 8 and 1.
How do I find my Enneagram Wing?
While some tests will tell you your wing type, I wouldn't use that to determine your wing. Mainly because the Enneagram types are 70% accurate at best and if you throw a wing result I think they are even less accurate.
Instead, you can read the features of your wing options and see what resonates.
If you find that you resonate with the characteristics of primarily one wing option, then chances are you have that as your dominant wing.
If you find that you're basically evenly split, you might have balanced wings.
If you don't resonate with the characteristics of any of the wing options, you simply can't wear your wings.

The 9 wings:It makes Type 1s a bit more quiet and aloof than other Type 1s. The 9-wing tends to make Ones more introverted, objective, and detached from emotions than others. They want to be good with a touch of peace.
The 2 wings:It makes Type 1s a bit warmer and louder than other Type 1s. Wing 2 tends to make Ones more outgoing, empathetic, and helpful than the others. They want to be good/proper with a touch of lovable/dear.

Ala 1:Makes Type 2 a little more objective and self-controlled than other Type 2s. Wing 1 tends to make 2s more critical, responsible, and have clearer boundaries than other 2s. They want to be loved/wanted with a hint of wanting be good/correct
The 3 wings:It makes Type 2s a bit more confident and charming than other Type 2s. Wing 3s tend to make 2s more outgoing, image-conscious, and ambitious. They want to be loved/loved with a hint of appreciation/admiration.

The 5 wings:Makes Type 4 a bit more introverted and eccentric than other Type 4s. Wing 5 tends to make 4s more of a loner, bohemian, and intellectual than other 4s. They want to be authentic/find meaning with a hint of competence/knowledge .

The 4 wings:Makes Type 5 a bit more creative and sensitive than other Type 5s. Wing 4 makes 5s tend to be more self-centered, independent, and empathetic than other 5s. Wants to be competent/knowledgeable with a touch of authenticity/Wants to find meaning.
The sixth wing:It makes Type 5s a little more guarded and social than other Type 5s. Wing 6s tend to make 5s more fearful, skeptical, and loyal than other 5s. They want to be competent/knowledgeable with an air of security/support.

The 5 wings:Makes Type 6 a bit more intellectual and serious than other Type 6s. Wing 5 tends to make 6s more self-possessed, analytical and introverted than other 6s. They want to be confident/supported with a touch of competence /knowledge.
The seventh wing:It makes Type 6s a little more outgoing and energetic than other Type 6s. Wing 7s tend to make 6s more active, fun, and adventurous than other 6s. They want to be safe/supported with an air of joy/satisfaction.

The sixth wing:It makes Type 7 a little more responsible and fearful than other Type 7s. The wing of the 6 tends to make the 7 more loyal, obedient and fun than other 7s. They want to be happy/satisfied with a hint of security/support .
Ala 8:This makes Type 7s a bit more passionate and competitive than other Type 7s. Wing 8s tend to make 7s bolder, more assertive, and more determined than other 7s. They want to be satisfied/satisfied with wanting to be independent/ be able to protect yourself

The seventh wing:Makes Type 8s a bit more outgoing and energetic than other Type 8s. Wing 7s tend to make 8s more impulsive, materialistic, and ambitious than other 8s. Wants to be independent/can protect themselves with a touch of joy/satisfaction .
The 9 wings:This makes Type 8 a little more approachable and kind than other Type 8s. Wing 9 makes 8s tend to be more introverted, understanding and cooperative than other 8s. They want to be independent/able to protect themselves with an air of peace /harmony.

Ala 8:It makes Type 9s a bit more assertive and outgoing than other Type 9s. Wing 8s tend to make 9s more confident, stubborn and stubborn than other 9s. They want peace/harmony with an air of independence/being able to protect themselves.

Are the wings important?
Knowing your wings allows you to understand more parts of yourself, and learning to develop and utilize the positive qualities of your wings can really bring balance and growth to your type.
That means I wouldn't hang on to them. It is much more important to focus on your main type followed by yours.subtypeif you are looking for growth
